About KIRA Foundation

KIRA Foundation is a Rwandan non-profit Foundation working to empower children and communities through inclusive, holistic education. A key area of focus is Social Emotional Learning (SEL), aiming to integrate SEL into national curricula, community education, and professional teacher training.

Volunteer opportunity overview

We seek a qualified Educational Psychologist with 5+ years of relevant experience to lead the design, training, and evaluation of SEL strategies. The consultant will offer technical expertise, coach educators, and support KIRA’s broader mission of promoting emotional well-being, resilience, and positive learning environments.

Key Responsibilities

1. Capacity Building & Training on SEL

  • Conduct needs assessments to identify training gaps.
  • Develop a contextualized SEL training curriculum, aligned with Rwanda’s CBC and KIRA’s learning model.
  • Create practical tools: facilitator guide, participant handbook, SEL practice toolkit.
  • Deliver flexible training formats (live, virtual, hybrid).
  • Design and apply pre/post assessments to measure impact.
  • Offer coaching & mentorship to educators, including follow-up support and peer-learning models.
  • Produce final training reports with recommendations and prepare certification materials for recognition.

2. Design of SEL Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) Tools

  • Develop an M&E framework with key indicators, data collection tools, and monitoring plans.
  • Align tools with national education goals and community-based learning environments.

Optional Deliverables

  • Develop e-learning modules or video tutorials.
  • Create a Training-of-Trainers (ToT) manual.
  • Integrate SEL into professional development plans.
  1. Curriculum Integration & Policy Alignment
  • Guide the integration of SEL into Rwanda’s national curriculum.
  • Map SEL competencies to the CBC (especially Life Skills & Citizenship).
  • Identify curriculum gaps and opportunities across subjects and education levels.
  • Develop an SEL implementation guide tailored for various age groups and delivery methods.

4. Stakeholder Engagement & Advocacy

  • Prepare policy briefs, presentations, and concept notes.
  • Engage with MINEDUC, REB, district education officers, and school leaders to support system-level SEL integration.

5. Pilot Program & Evaluation

  • Support SEL pilot implementation in select schools.
  • Document findings, outcomes, and teacher/learner feedback.
  • Propose scalable recommendations and contribute to policy advocacy.

6. Community-Based SEL

  • Help adapt SEL tools for informal education and vulnerable youth.
  • Provide guidance on trauma-informed, inclusive, and culturally appropriate approaches.
  • Support the development of psychosocial tools for educators and learners.

Support Provided by KIRA Foundation

  • Travel and accommodation support during Rwanda fieldwork.
  • Access to KIRA’s professional network and education partners.
  • Visibility in KIRA publications and joint initiatives.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Master’s in Educational Psychology or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in SEL, or teacher training.
  • Skilled in curriculum development, coaching, and assessment design.
  • Proficiency in English (French is a plus).
  • Experience in multicultural educational contexts.
  • Strong communication, empathy, and collaboration skills.
  • Availability for remote work and occasional travel.
